Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
