Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state early analysis show the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him without words and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
