Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
The accused admitted 17 charges at the courthouse on Friday

An individual who contaminated sweets with sleeping medication and distributed them to minors at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offences against two young males both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and a grown-up fell ill at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The accused was remanded in custody prior to a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She said his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

The man engaged in a "sweet game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and request they to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had engaged in this activity with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the man had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had concerns in summer 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had worries about what was going on, justifiably.

"They resolved" to have a look in the individual's items."

The prosecutor explained objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were found, and his stepchild notified the authorities about his concerns.

She stated Ruben went on to play the "treat game" with six youngsters that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she added.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining the police response of the incident.

Mrs Prior said the minors were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson notified the police a second time.

She stated the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five youngsters.
