A recent study indicates that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
