British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
